Housing Strain and Disease in South Africa

South Africa, especially the gold fields, is becoming congested with the vast tide of people that is flowing in. Rents increase much faster than wages, and population faster than houses. Cottages of five rooms rent in Johannesburg as high as $125 a month, and not the best at that. Eleven persons sometimes occupy a house. Single rooms rent for ten guineas—$50.00 and over. Suffering is bound to follow. Leprosy is becoming prevalent on the coast; owing, some believe, to the vast amount of fish consumed.
