Reading the Bible Through

(Extracts from a talk given by Elder S. N. Haskell)

I BELIEVE that we have lost greatly because we have not taken the whole Bible. We may say that we are interested in a certain portion of the Bible; but why not be interested in the whole of it? Why not begin and read the Bible through carefully and see what God will do for you?

Some of you will say that the Bible is such a big book that it will take a long time to read it through. If you should employ ten hours a day, how long do you suppose it would take you to read it through?—Ten days. This is a problem that you can easily demonstrate. You have a thousand pages in your Bible; and by reading ten pages an hour, ten hours a day, for ten days, you will read it through.

Now, why is not the Bible interesting to you?—You do not read it enough to get the connection. You ought to read enough of the Bible every day so that you could remember to-day what you read yesterday; and you would then get hold of the principles that underlie all this great fund of knowledge. It is all there in the Book, and you can bring it all out. But one ray of light will strike one mind, and another ray will strike another mind; and just as is the condition of your mind when you read the Bible, just so will the Spirit of God impress the truth upon your mind. If you are weighed down because of your sins, or by some dark shadows which Satan has thrown across your pathway, the moment you begin to read your Bible, there will be a ray of light thrown into your heart which will give peace and joy,—just the very thing you need. It is God speaking from Genesis to Revelation; it is a voice that comes to the soul; and the very God who gave the Bible, is talking to you through the Sacred Volume.

The Influence of Song

By Mrs. J. Furman Green

By Mrs. J. Furman Green

The story I am about to relate happened in the Black Hills of Dakota. It was a beautiful day in the early spring, and the birds were singing in the pine-trees that surrounded a neat little cottage situated in one of the many mining towns that rise like mushrooms in those dreary hills.

From the open door of this little cottage a young girl’s voice floated out on the fragrant air, as sweet and clear as the bird notes in the tree tops. She was singing that sweet old hymn she had learned in her Sabbath-school:

“What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear; What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer.”

Just over the fence, in an adjoining lot, was a miners’ cabin; and on a rude bed covered with dirty quilts lay a sick man. He had lain there for many days with no one to care for him, except what little aid his companions could give him before they went to their daily work in the morning, and on their return from their labors at night. When the big mine whistle screeched forth their release from toil, tired and begrimed with dirt they slowly climbed the long hill to their one-roomed cabin and its lonely occupant.

He counted the long hours before their return with a weary sigh. They had placed some coarse food and strong tea within his reach, but he could not touch a mouthful. His body was aching with pain, and — must he acknowledge it? — his heart was aching worse, if possible, with its longing for the loving care and sympathy of the loved ones he had left in an Eastern city so long ago, when he like many others sought those hills to find the shining gold. Did it pay? he kept asking himself. How far from God he had wandered since he left the sweet environments of his home! He was a Christian then; but now what was he? His companions were drinking, gambling men; and he had been afraid of their ridicule when they had asked him to join them in a little pastime. But alas, in revelry much of his hard-earned gold had found its way. Why had he not been stronger in his principles, and set them a better example? his conscience was asking him; but now it was too late.

Just then the same girlish voice rang out on the morning air another stanza:

“Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer.”

At this moment the young girl’s mother called her to perform some household duty, and the song ceased. The sick man sank back upon his pillow to think of the song more than the singer. He had often seen the fair-haired girl flitting in and out of the cottage like a sunbeam, and had heard her sing before; but to-day her song had a peculiar meaning to him.

Yes, Jesus knew his great human weakness, and how hard it would be for him to acknowledge that weakness to his companions, as he felt he must do before he could expect God to receive him again — him who by his daily life had so often denied his Saviour.

Hark! Once more the sweet voice sounded in his ears. Once more he raised his head to listen as she sang the last half of a stanza:

“Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer. In His arms He’ll take and shield thee; Thou shalt find a solace there.”

As the song ceased, he sank back murmuring to himself, “Will He hear my prayer? What does the good Book say about it?” So, crawling from his bed, he staggered weakly across the room to a small leather trunk that stood in the corner. The till was heavy, and he almost fell over with its weight; but sinking on his knees he groped in the bottom, and soon produced a well-worn Bible. Shaking with weakness, he turned its leaves. Suddenly his eyes fell on the words, “I will arise and go to my father.” Ah, yes, he was indeed a prodigal son.

Again he turned the leaves in feverish haste, and his eyes fell upon the words, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” With tears streaming down his cheeks, he cried aloud: “O, I will go back to my Father’s house. I will knock and ask Him to receive me once more.” And closing the trunk, his weak head sank on the lid in prayer, and he prayed as only a sin-sick soul can pray, sobbing out his grief over his sin as a wayward child tells his tale of wo to a confiding earthly parent.

And there, a few hours later, a companion found him lying quite exhausted, his finger resting on the sweet promises. He raised him gently, and placed him back in bed, and sent for a physician; and one of his companions stayed with him after that, often reading to him by his request many of the precious promises from his Bible, while he in turn told them of his awakening through the influence of the sweet-voiced girl singer over the way, and the beautiful song she sang of Jesus. Ah, yes, “A little child shall lead them.”

What Our Children Shall Be

By C. F. Koch

PARENTS should ask, What sort of men and women do I want my children to be? Are they headed on the road to that ideal? It is comparatively easy to forecast the future

of a child, not in detail, of course, but broadly. What children sow, they reap as men and women. The laws of the world are constant.

Now there is nothing more potent in shaping human life than reading. This is important because reading sharpens thought, and as a man thinketh so is he. If I let my boy read penny-dreadfuls and dime novels, he is sure to degenerate, even if he does not run away to sea, or commit highway robbery, or shoot his playmate accidentally. He is sure to have barren interests, and to take delight in those things which conserve not a wholesome cheerfulness, but a superficial mirth. If, on the other hand, I direct his reading, I am sure his spiritual growth will be healthy and constant to the end of his days.— C. F. Koch.

Securing Happiness

By Converted, Catholic

MAN's efforts to discover in the material world what has till now remained hidden will be rewarded. Men like Cook and Peary, the Wright brothers, of Dayton, Ohio, Bleriot, the Frenchman who crossed the English Channel, and the other aviators who are traversing the air in their flying machines at the rate of fifty miles an hour, are applauded for their skill and perseverance. And yet man's limitations appear amid his keenest researches.

Ten thousand thousand things exist, we know, By Science tested and by Reason tried, With no conclusive issue; save to show How much we need a better light and guide.

Can Science gage the influence that draws The needle to the magnet? Can it see The perfume of the rose? or measure laws By which the flower gives honey to the bee!

Notwithstanding the great scientific discoveries of our time, man's happiness can be secured only by the union of the soul with God. The enjoyment of material things can never fully satisfy us. “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.” When the soul is united to God by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, “the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God and heirs of heaven.” Herein lies the solution of the mystery of life and of this world which God has created. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and He will send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to teach us all things worth knowing for the eternal life.—Converted, Catholic.

Some Day

By Flora E. Warren

Some day the wars of earth for power and glory Will find surcease; Some day the hearts now torn will learn Christ's story, And be at peace.

The strife begun e'er earth had seen the dawning, With all increase, Will end; for earth has viewed the thrust of morning, And cries for peace.

Sin's tiny streamlet Eden saw in motion In days of old, Now fills a vast and deep, mysterious ocean All may behold!

Some day the heart where Hatred grew and cherished Her treach’rous scheme, Will sink in endless death—with it to perish Her glory dream.

As morning sun dispels the midnight terror, The flow'rs appear, Eternal Right will banish every error, And Truth be clear.

Peace will again unfold her robe of brightness, Love's diadem; The pure in heart behold heaven's pearly whiteness, Her richest gem.

The soul so weary of its inward striving, Will sweetly rest; The heart so prone to secret, selfish thriving, Be manifest.

Each heart shall know its King, each soul His power; Unto his King Shall be the soul's desire in that glad hour— An offering.

Prohibition and Trial by Jury

JUDGE JULES E. ALFORD, in a ruling at Mobile, Alabama, declared that portion of the celebrated Fuller prohibition law denying a defendant the right of a trial by jury is unconstitutional. He said, in his opinion, that section 11 of the Alabama constitution stated that the right of trial by jury must remain inviolate, and that the Fuller bill was in direct conflict with this. Twenty cases of violation of the prohibition law were on the above decision sent to a higher court for trial by jury. The prohibitionists, through the state’s attorney-general, filed a petition in the city court asking for a mandamus against Judge Alford to compel him to try the cases and render judgment.—Detroit News Tribune.

Signs of the Times Monthly

Sold by agents in the United States and Canada during the year 1909. The retail value of these magazines is nearly $40,000. About two thirds of this amount represents the agents’ profits. But few, if any, worked for financial gain, however. They believe the message which it gives and are desirous of carrying it to others. Most of them will continue in the year to come. One agent writes: “I have been selling papers to-day. I started out this morning with faith in God that I would sell some papers, and I did. This has been the happiest day that I have ever had in all my life. I had my heart uplifted to God in prayer.” We want recruits to this band of workers, and will gladly help others get started. This illustrated magazine of 48 pages and cover, treats on Bible subjects, Religious Liberty, the Home, Temperance, and Missions. 5 to 50 copies cost 5 cents each; 50 or more cost 4 cents each. January Number Now Ready

Swindling Bands in Spain.

The Department of State in Washington has sent out notice to the various newspapers that a band of swindlers in Spain is operating in the United States. This warning is based upon a report from the American Consul-general at Barcelona. These swindlers are in various cities and towns in Spain, and with more or less variation send to different persons in America a story that an alleged political prisoner from Cuba, is at the point of death; has but one friend, the prison priest, through whose office he is smuggling the letter out of the prison. The prisoner is rich; has a fortune deposited in the United States; his certificate of deposit is concealed in a secret receptacle of his valise; that the valise is held by the court which tried and condemned him, and will be held until the prisoner or his representative has satisfied the costs of the trial. He has an only daughter, and he wishes some one, some dear friend, will take pity on that only daughter; will become that daughter's guardian and take possession of that daughter's fortune and his fortune, estimated at $30,000 and upwards. That is the first letter. Others follow more and more pathetic. If the victim does not come within the toils of the swindler before that, finally the prisoner dies. Still there is willingness that the one addressed shall have the charge of the daughter, and the care of the large fortune for her sake. The United States Government warns the people to have absolutely nothing to do with such smooth stories; that they are invariably fraudulent, and are told for the sole purpose of swindling some unwise persons out of money. One of the really shrewd things in connection with it is that the one who receives the letter must let no one know it at all. Matters are fixed in such a shape that if he reveals the secret himself, why, he has no power to obtain the money.

Shiloh, the Man of Sorrows

By Editor

We wanted to say more in this number about our serial story, but have not space. Suffice to say now that it is excellent, illuminating, instructive concerning the greatest Character which ever walked the earth. Its title is “Shiloh, the Man of Sorrows.”

No More, Please.

By Editor

We wish again to thank those friends who have sent in copies of the appealing little poem, “Are All the Children In?” which was printed on the first page of our last issue. The experience has told us this, that there are many among our readers who cherish good, heart-touching poetry of fine sentiment. We thank again all those who responded. Those who sent cherished copies will have this satisfaction; they will know the author; for one of the copies sent us came from her own pen. We hope that hereafter it will be credited to its rightful source.

The Motto Calendar for 1910

By Editor

“The Motto Calendar for 1910” has again come to our table, each page filled with excellent mottos, always helpful and inspiring. We told the story last year of how this calendar had been prepared for years by a noble man for the sole purpose of helping his fellow men. Last year, on his death, his widow and children decided to carry on the same work for awhile. About thirty were sent for last year after reading our note, but only one of the thirty sent postage. It is asking too much to require the donor of the calendar to supply the calendar and pay postage. The calendar may be obtained for two three-cent stamps to cover cost of wrapper, mailing, and postage. Please make note of this. Address Etta Konitzky, Reisterstown Road, near Kate Avenue, Baltimore, Md.

Our Next Issue

By Editor

The special subject of types, symbols, and realities in the great plan of salvation will be continued in our next number. The great time prophecy of Dan. 8:14, the 2,300 days, will be explained, with what the cleansing of the sanctuary means. It is a subject of great importance, and ought to be of intense interest to every soul.

The Last Opportunity

By Editor

AFTER Jan. 1, 1910, the price of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES will be $1.75 a year. Now it is $1.50. Rising prices in all that enters into the making of a paper demand the increase in the price that we are making. We know that many of our subscribers appreciate this. But the old price holds to January 1.

If you wish to extend your subscription for one, two, or three years at the same price, $1.50, you can do so.

If you wish to subscribe for five years, it is only $6.50. A goodly number have so subscribed. One long-time subscriber in Mexico writes: “I am getting tired of renewing my subscription every year. Please renew and change the label to ten years ahead.”

The SIGNS OF THE TIMES and the Signs Monthly may be obtained in combination now for $2.00. After January 1 the price for the two will be $2.25. Subscribe now.

A Matter of Thoughtlessness

By Editor

We are sure our correspondents wish to do the SIGNS OF THE TIMES no injustice. Many of them, nay, most of them are thoughtful of this, and we wish to thank them. Others, who are doubtless both just and generous, are thoughtless. For instance, we frequently get post-cards, asking for information which if furnished may mean the expenditure of much valuable time, and the writing of a letter. Surely such a request ought to demand at the very least a postage stamp, or a return stamped envelope. Just recently comes a request without even a stamp for reply, asking a copy of a letter of about ten pages typewritten. To copy this letter means from one to two hours of a stenographer’s time, who has an abundance of necessary work to do. It would seem that it is a small matter to enclose ten cents postage as part appreciation of the expected reply. The editors are here to help our subscribers to an extent even more than is justly called for, but when such requests are purely personal, it would seem that the extra labor involved on the part of the house of publication should be appreciated to the extent of a postage stamp. Hundreds of such requests aggregate quite a sum to us; the expense is a mere trifle to each one.

The Farmer Boy’s Helpful Paper

“Otwell’s Farmer Boy,” published in Carlinville, Ill., illustrates just what an earnest, honest soul can do for his fellows. The paper was started a few years since as an amateur affair when the editor and publisher was a mere boy. But Will H. Otwell has grown, and his paper and its influence have grown, too. He has a round-up of farmer boys every year, at the last of which Governor Deneen was present. The Farmer Boy is endeavoring to be helpful to farmer boys wherever it goes, to work for a noble, temperate, honorable manhood and womanhood. God bless its work.

A Great Map

Just recently there assembled in the Foreign Office in London, a conference of delegates from the leading governments of the world, who are met for the purpose of a preparation, on a common system, of a map of the world, on a scale of one to one million, or about 16 miles to the inch. The object is to make a map that will be uniform through the entire world, with a uniform set of symbols which can be adopted by all nations. Surely it will be an excellent thing.

Sweden and the Land.

Sweden has 172,900 square miles of territory, but only 6,000,000 inhabitants. America offers advantages which Sweden, in her laws favoring the landholders, does not. Now Sweden offers to loan government money to laborers to induce them to buy land at home, the loan to be for ten years on the easy payment plan. The country now is no more densely populated than the United States.

The Symbols in Daniel 2

The emphasis upon the symbols in Daniel 2 should not be laid upon the anatomical parts of the image, but upon the material of which those parts are composed. The whole image of a man represented the kingdom of man; but the kingdoms are symbolized by the gold, the silver, the brass, the iron, and the iron and clay. Keeping this distinction in mind, we shall be greatly helped.

The Stage

Anna Held, the noted actress, declares, “It is dangerous, very dangerous” for young women to go on the stage. And she emphasizes this by saying that they should shun the stage as they would the bubonic plague. Why? “Because those that get along must do so only at the cost of their innocence and their reputation.”

The Biggest Naval Gun. Total length, 53½ feet; weight, 64 tons; bore, 14 inches; capacity of powder-chamber, 15,848 cubic inches; smokeless powder charge, 365 pounds; weight of projectile, 1,400 pounds; muzzle velocity, 2,600 feet per second; muzzle energy, 65,600 foot tons; will shoot 25 miles; at 5 miles will pierce 13 inches of steel armor. The great barrel would contain 13 six year old boys lying lengthwise.
