The Atonement

The author, in a book of 368 pages, takes up this great central doctrine of the gospel, and treats it in two parts. Part first,

An Atonement Consistent with Reason.

In this he shows that the doctrine of an atonement through the medium of a voluntary substitute is consistent with reason. Part second,

The Atonement as Revealed in the Bible.

In this is discussed the plan of redemption through Christ, by which every sinner who accepts Christ will be justified; sin will be turned back upon the head of its originator; the earth will be cleansed from the curse; God’s righteous government will be restored over the entire universe; and all who will not become loyal subjects of that government will be destroyed.
The book presents a CRITICAL AND EXHAUSTIVE TREATISE on this interesting subject, by a thorough Bible student, and wholly from a Bible standpoint, and cannot fail to be of great value to everyone who reads it.
Third edition, bound in cloth, embossed in black, with gold title on back and front cover.
Price, postpaid, $1.00.

The Wisdom of the Courts

The Wisdom of the Courts.—The Supreme Court of New York has decided the Sunday law of that state to be constitutional. The United States Supreme Court has decided the same with reference to the wicked Sunday law of Georgia. But the Supreme Court of California recently decided the Barbers' Sunday law, very similar to the New York provision, to be unconstitutional, and Illinois Supreme Court follows with a like decision with reference to the Cody Sunday law of that state. Were it not for the religious element, there would be no such dissonance, and it all shows that no such laws as a Sunday law ought ever to exist.

Christians and Tobacco.

It is a sad thing that Christian denominations have to wrestle with the tobacco question among themselves. The great Methodist Episcopal Conference has the matter under discussion. On the proposition that the bishops be directed not to appoint at the annual conference officers addicted to the use of tobacco, the Committee on Itinerancy stood 24 for to 22 against. And a hot debate is promised over the question in the General Conference. Not only ought there to be no tobacco-using ministers, but no tobacco-using Christians. What is needed is conversion to Christ and the essential and foundation principles of Christianity. The matter is then easily settled. It will settle itself, but the tobacco will be outside the church. There is more expended for it now than for foreign missions.

No Paper Next Week

THERE will be no paper next week.

Our Next Issue

Our Next Issue.—The next number of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES will bear the date of June 11. As stated in our prospectus, we give but fifty numbers a year. We omit one number near the middle of the volume and one at the close. Two Sabbath school and two Sunday school lessons are given in this number, because of the omission.

Our Outlook

Our Outlook.— We print two important articles in our Outlook department this week, one on the Sunday-law work in California, and the other on the position of the Supreme Court of the United States relative to Sunday laws. The article indicates very clearly the position of the Supreme Court on this important question. It was clear enough to many before; it seems to us that it ought to be clear to all now. When will men know that Freedom is dying?

Tardy Justice

On May 16 eight untried murderers were “rounded up” in Judge Belcher’s court of San Francisco to enter their first pleas, preliminary to trial. Many of these have been long delayed, and this is generally the case the greater the crime. America’s last annual record of murders is said to be excelled only by Turkey, and that in her year of Armenian massacres. Justice seems not only blind, but crippled. The true situation is presented in Isa. 59: 14.

Early Education

One of the useful little exchanges that comes to our table, which is worthy of special mention, is Early Education. Its object is to help mothers and all others who have the care of children, in the training of the little ones. It is live, earnest, suggestive, practical, and helpful, edited by a mother. Monthly, eight pages, and only 25 cents a year. Address, Early Education, College View, Neb.

Not Because of, but Notwithstanding

Not Because of, but Notwithstanding.—Many say with reference to the observance of Sunday, “I have been blessed in keeping the day, and so has the church; has not God by his blessing sanctioned the day and its observance?” To many the fact that God has blessed and prospered is sufficient evidence for the truth of a theory or practise in religion; but in other things they would repudiate such a principle.
Many men have built up a prosperous business, giving employment to faithful and honest laborers, upon the foundation of fraud and oppression. Does the prosperity prove the genuineness and beneficence of the foundation? Many have prospered while drinking intoxicating liquors and in the ownership of slaves. Does the prosperity prove that the drinking of intoxicating liquors and slavery are good things? Many good men have unwittingly passed counterfeit bills to other good men, who in turn have passed them to others, and during all the time, have enjoyed the blessing of God. Did the blessing or the acts of the good men make the counterfeit bill genuine? Of course, every one knows to the contrary. God’s blessing and prospering hand came to all these men not because of their sins, mistakes, or errors, but notwithstanding them. “No lie is of the truth.” Darkness never becomes light. Sin never can become righteousness. A counterfeit can never become genuine.
Which Will You Choose?—The Sunday is the counterfeit of God’s Sabbath. It will never become the true. It has not God’s superscription and image. It does not bear the marks of his authority. It is not of his planting, and will therefore be rooted up. (See Matt. 15:9.) Ought it therefore to be kept by Christians any longer?
In the wilderness, in the darkness of midnight, it is easy for the feet to stray into wrong paths. It is easy to gather stones for gems, and shining metal for gold. The gray mists of morning do not wholly reveal the deceptions to the eyes of weary traveler and laborer. So in the wilderness of the Dark Ages of pago-papal error it is not strange that the weary, persecuted, benighted church stepped into wrong paths, and gathered stones for gems, and shining brass for gold. It is not strange that in the slowly clearing mists of the subsequent ages, with the myriad voices of error calling, she should yet cling to a few errors, and heed the erring voices? Some of the old counterfeit bills look well worn, as tho they had done good service, but should we retain them?
But the true light now shineth. God’s word is ringing out loudly, clearly, as never before, illuminating the way and calling men to hear the voice of God. Will they hear? Will they cast away the base counterfeit, the Sunday-sabbath? It is but temporal. Will they accept the eternal genuine? It is not a matter between sects or men, but between each individual soul and God. The decisions we make and the motives that actuate us will be determined in God’s judgment, where the sophistries of error or the counterfeit of truth do not pass current, but where his unperverted law bears sway. Reader, how and for whom will you decide the Sabbath question?

Disasters Cyclonic

“Disasters Cyclonic.”—The last few weeks have given us a fearful record of wind-storms, cyclones, and electrical disturbances in Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Oklahoma. In Oklahoma there were five cyclones in eight days. The loss of life is estimated at several hundred persons. Nothing like this has been known before, so far as we are aware, thus early in the season. The “earth is waxed old,” and “the prince of the power of the air” has poisoned the elements of the atmosphere and perverted its laws. How these things should make us long for that new heaven and new earth which shall know no storm or tempest!
