Morse Between Two Fires

ACCORDING to the Christian Cynosure, Congressman Morse, of Massachusetts, is in a position between two fires. He is the lower House champion of the proposed religious amendment to the Constitution, and the Cynosure says “he is an active A. P. A., as well as Freemason.” This, in face of the fact that the supreme president of the A. P. A. has issued a circular warning the order to oppose the amendment, places the congressman in a rather illogical situation, if he continues in active support of the order. The aforesaid circular denounces the amendment as “a remarkable and dangerous proposal to place the affairs of state in the hands of the church.”

The Black Death

The fearful “black death,” or plague, which once decimated the great cities of the world, is now raging in that hotbed of all diseases—China. In fact, it is now found in cities from Japan to Malacca. Strict quarantine has been declared in all ports on the Pacific Coast. Remedies increase,—and many are good,—most excellent sanitary laws are passed, but the race is still sick and dying, and it will be until the better day of Christ’s reign of righteousness shall begin. Then “the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.” Come, blessed day.

Conversion Requires Complete Surrender

Thus writes a frequent correspondent, a member, we believe, of the “Salvation Army:” “Get up and say you are saved is man’s way of conversion. But God’s way is never to rest until you know you are regenerated and born of God, and that will never take place until our wills are entirely lost in God’s will. Unless I forsake all that I have, I can not enter the kingdom of God.” All of which is true. Give up all of self and sin and the world, and accept of God and his word and his Son.

The Only Reason

The Only Reason.—There is but one reason given in the New Testament why men will not and can not obey God’s law, and that reason is the carnal mind. “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” Rom. 8: 7. But Christ “abolished in his flesh the enmity” (Eph. 2: 15), that he might abolish it in our flesh, that the keeping of God’s law might be a work of love (1 John 5: 3).

Walla Walla College Closing Exercises

Prof. E. A. Sutherland writes: “The closing exercises of the Walla Walla College were held in the college chapel May 19. Elder A. T. Jones delivered a most excellent address on ‘The Science of Salvation Leads All Other Sciences.’ The graduating class consisted of three, Floyd B. Brallier and Walter R. Sutherland, in the Scientific Course, and George F. Enoch, in the Biblical.”
