Earlier text: SOME WORDS FOR ALL CONCERNING RICHES

LESSON IX.—AUGUST 31.—WORK OF THE JUDGMENT.

[Note to the Student.—These lessons are not designed to be exhaustive, but suggestive. In references to the “Desire of Ages,” in the lessons, the subscription edition is referred to. Those who have only the trade edition will find the matter in chapters 1, 4, 11, 27, 77, 78; also read “Patriarchs and Prophets,” chapters 5 and 30. “Christ Our Advocate,” Bible Students’ Library No. 12 (price, 10 cents), and “Looking unto Jesus” (price, $1.00) will be found a great help. The SIGNS OF THE TIMES will have an article on the subject of each lesson this quarter by J. O. Corliss. Read these articles in connection with the study of the lesson. We have not space to print all the scriptures. Let the student study them carefully from the Bible. Those printed are from the Revised Version.]

SUGGESTIVE QUESTIONS.

1. Who opens the judgment and presides over it?
“I beheld till thrones were placed, and One that was ancient of days did sit; His raiment was white as snow, and the hair of His head like pure wool: His throne was fiery flames, and the wheels thereof burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him; thousand thousands ministered unto Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.” Dan. 7:9, 10. (Ps. 50:6.)
2. Who assist in the work?
“He that overcometh shall thus be arrayed in white garments; and I will in no wise blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.” Rev. 3:5.
3. What part does Christ act?
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye may not sin. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1. (Heb. 9:24; 7:25; Rev. 3:5.)
4. On what condition will our names be confessed on that day?
“Every one therefore who shall confess Me before men, him will I also confess before My Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in heaven.” Matt. 10:32, 33. (Luke 12:8, 9.)
5. What books will be used in the investigation of each case?
“And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.” Rev. 20:12. “Book of remembrance.” (Mal. 3:16. Note .)
6. What does the book of life contain?
“Howbeit in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:20. (Phil. 4:3; Rev. 21:27.)
7. What is contained in the book of remembrance?
“Then they that feared the Lord spake one with another; and the Lord hearkened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before Him, for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name.” Mal. 3:16.
“Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.” Acts 10:31. (Ps. 56:8. Note .)
8. What does the book of death contain?
“For thou wash me with lye, and take thee much soap; yet thine iniquity is marked before Me, saith the Lord God.” Jer. 2:22. (Isa. 65:3-7; Ps. 149:9. Note .)
9. In the judgment what will be taken into account?
“I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon as among them that know Me: Behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this one was born there. Yea, of Zion it shall be said, This one and that one was born in her; and the Most High Himself shall establish her. The Lord shall count, when He writeth up the peoples, This one was born there.” Ps. 87:4-6.
10. After a name has once been written in the book of life, is there a possibility of its being blotted out?
“Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.” Ps. 69:28. (Ex. 32:32; Rev. 3:5.)
11. If the name is retained, what is blotted out?
“I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake; and I will not remember thy sins.” Isa. 43:25. (Isa. 44:22.)
12. Are sins blotted out at the time when they are forgiven?
“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.” Eccl. 12:14. (Matt. 18:23-25.)
13. During what time are they blotted out?
“Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send the Christ who hath been appointed for you, even Jesus.” Acts 3:19, 20.
14. What will then be the condition of God’s people?
“In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found; for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.” Jer. 50:20. (Isa. 4:2-5.)

The Strike Situation

At this writing the strike troubles indicate no early settlement, either in the East or West. Negotiations between the Steel Trust and the men were abruptly broken off by Mr. Morgan, who offered to take the workmen back on the terms existing before the strike occurred, utterly receding from the concessions offered in the first conference. In San Francisco there seems to be no disposition to concede anything on either side. Really it is a sad condition of things, and many suffer who are not interested parties in either side. Looking at it from the employers’ side, one can not but feel that their claim to the right to run their own business is but just. Looking at it from the workingmen’s side, they feel that the unions must possess certain control over the businesses in which they are engaged, or they will be ground down in wages and hours increased. Selfishness is at the bottom of all the trouble. The Spirit of Christ alone can remedy these ills. That would lead the employer to look to the interest of his employes, and vice versa.

The Golden Rule.

Not long since we heard the brilliant editor of the Christian Advocate relate this incident: A drunkard came to him and asked for money to buy whisky, on the ground that as Dr. B. was a Christian he should give the money on the basis of the Golden Rule: “All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” Dr. B. told the man that he (the drunkard) was asking him (Dr. B.) to apply a rule in a general way that was designed for the Christian field. Of course, it is a rule for Christians, to exercise toward Christians, but it is a rule for Christians to exercise toward unbelievers of every sort. Did Dr. B. wish the whisky?—Assuredly not. He would not, as a Christian, that any man should so gratify his self-indulgence. He was under no obligation, therefore, to give to the man money on the Golden Rule basis. In fact, he was positively prohibited from doing it. If he had been in the midst of heathen China, he could safely act from the same rule. No man in a normal condition wishes to be persecuted, wishes to be cheated, wishes to be injured in any way, in property, in reputation, in life. No man would therefore so injure others. The Golden Rule is a safe rule to apply under all normal circumstances, everywhere.

An Appeal to Young Men

The appeal by Mrs. DuBois in our Home department we are sure is none too strong. We hope young men will read it.

The Need of Missionary Effort

Will not all our Christian friends read the earnest appeal, “The Need of Missionary Effort,” on page 2? It ought to move hearts. We thought we would quote here some of its precious sentences, but we would not know where to stop. Read all yourself, and may the Spirit which inspired the words fill the heart of the reader.

Ancient History, Which Is Also Modern

We earnestly hope that our readers have followed Mr. Jones in his articles entitled, “Ancient History ‘Which Is Also Modern,’” and that they will give special study to the one in this week’s issue, the last of the series. It is of interest to all. Those who may wish to read further, who may wish to consider some of the primary, fundamental, foundation principles, we commend to them, “The Rights of ‘the People,’” bound in cloth $1.00, paper 40 cents.

The Yellow Journals and Labor Strikes

If some of the “yellow journals” were eliminated from this capital-and-labor contest, the strikes would be much sooner settled. They keep more bad blood stirred up between the parties in dispute than any other element. Every sensational thing said by leaders on either side is made the most of, and sometimes much more of than was intended, and explanations rarely ever follow. We are profoundly convinced that the employers and employed would much sooner get-together if it were not for the self-assumed mediators, the sensational journals aforesaid.

Religious Persecution and the Knowledge of God

The worst persecution generally comes from those who are the most devoutly religious in a wrong way. Never is there persecution from the strictly non-religious. Sometimes the irreligious are intolerant, because supremely selfish, worshiping self as a god. But the non-religious cares not what people believe enough to lead him to endeavor to prohibit or coerce. The active persecutor is the active religionist. It was the Pharisee, “the strictest sect” of the Jews, who persecuted Jesus. The devoutest pagan emperors were the most intolerant. It was the most devoted of Roman Catholics who formed the army of persecutors in the medieval ages.
Jesus foretold this spirit of intolerance and revealed its secret. He shows us in a word that while it is religious it is not Christian. A man may be religiously Christian, possessing the Christian religion, or he may be a strong religionist, professedly Christian, and know nothing of Christianity. And so Jesus tells His disciples, after speaking the most comforting words: “These things I have spoken unto you, that ye should not be made to stumble. They shall put you out of the synagogues; yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father nor Me.” John 16:1–3, R.V.
When men do not know God, they are prone to put themselves in the place of God, on the judgment seat, condemning all who may not see things in their own narrow vision. That is the spirit of antichrist. But he who knows God, he who knows Christ Jesus, will see himself in the light of their glory so poor, so mean, so insignificant and unworthy, that he will have charity for all his enemies. He will not himself ignore God’s truth. He will endeavor to teach others to regard it. But he will have all charity for the transgressors. The religion of Jesus Christ knows no persecution of others, tho it has suffered all persecution from others. The Christian, he who knows Christ Jesus, knows that there is no one so competent to judge as his Master, and hence he is willing to leave all to Him.

How Can It Do It?

—What spread-eagle nonsense is the following, from Senator McLaurin at Spartansburg, South Carolina, July 4:—
Our nation, with its free government and its aggressive Christian civilization, is in a position to march forward and convert the world. With the isles of the Pacific in our possession, with the confidence of the millions of heathens in the East, and with our wealth and commerce and Anglo-Saxon love of liberty, we can raise the banner of the cross and accomplish the heaven-designed work of having the Gospel preached to every creature.
“Convert the world”! To what? to whom? To the liberty of the few? to the inequality of man? to the worship of Mammon and Mars? What Gospel will “we”—a nation—carry? How fully is that nation prepared to do this, with its strife of labor and capital, its race conflicts, its 10,000 homicides, its numerous suicides and lynchings, its awful procession of 100,000 drunkards, stepping into their graves at the rate of 275 a day, its myriads of prostitutes and libertines,—how can this nation “convert the world,” or accomplish the work of carrying the Gospel to every creature?

The Decline of Faith

“The greatest problem of the twentieth century,” the noted English preacher, F. W. Farrar, D.D., Dean of Canterbury, and author of “Life of Christ” and many other works, tells us, is “how to keep alive in the hearts of the vast mass of men nominally Christian a deep and effectual faith in those doctrines of the Christian religion to which they still give a nominal adherence.” Dr. Farrar continues: “There is perhaps less of open and ostentatious infidelity in these days than there was in the days of Charles the Second, or in the earlier years of the eighteenth century; but on the other hand, tho unbelief is, as a rule, more reticent, all serious observers see grave reasons to fear that there is a far more widely spread spirit of doubt, and even of positive unbelief, than there has ever been among men who have never professedly abandoned all allegiance to the religion of their fathers.”—Christian Work. Among the causes of this, Dr. Farrar notes the conclusions which people derive from the results of the “higher criticism.” The sad thing is that there is great lack of faith—practical infidelity—in the eternal verities. Jesus said: “When the Son of man cometh, shall He find faith on the earth?” It is implied that it would be greatly wanting.

Reforming State and Agricultural Fairs

The Civic Committee, of Boston, Edwin Bumstead, 161 Milk Street, secretary, are endeavoring to inaugurate a reform in State and agricultural fairs. They have asked the various secretaries of State Boards of Agriculture whether the purely agricultural fair or the “wide-open” fair, allowing the sale of intoxicating liquors, games of chance, immoral shows, circuses, etc., is the more profitable; and replies from twenty-three States are almost unanimous in declaring for the purely agricultural fair as the best paying financially, socially, and educationally. California is the only one in the twenty-three which does not favor the strict prohibition of intoxicating liquors. The Golden State is blinded by her wine interest, which is ruining its thousands. We hope the reform may be effective; for generally, as at present conducted, the fairs, State, county, and town, held ostensibly in the interests of agriculture, are positively demoralizing in influence.

The Prize of the High Calling

The great men of the world have trouble about their honors. This is because that in most of the world's races, no matter how many may enter, only one can win. Ever since the naval battle between the Spanish and American squadrons off Santiago, Cuba, there has been a warm contention as to whether Sampson or Schley is entitled to the credit of the victory. The result is that an official investigation is now being held. If these two great men were giving their undivided energies in the race for “the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus,” there would be no such controversy as that in which they and their friends have been engaged. Both could have a part in the honor attached to that Name that is “above every name.” Fruitless indeed are all these contentions for corruptible crowns.

Different, That Is All

Different, That Is All.—Max O'Rell, the bright French writer, truly says to the Englishman that “nations are not better than others, not even his ‘own; that they are not worse either; that they are ‘only different.’” That is a good truth for missionaries to learn.

Virginia Untrue to Original Principles

“Virginia Untrue to Original Principles,” in the Sentinel of Liberty of August 1, shows the drift of a namby-pamby Church-and-State-ism in what was once the strong-hold of religious liberty. Virginia is a long way from the times of Jefferson.
